Everything you need to know about menopause

Menopause

What is the difference between menopause and the transition phase?

The terms "perimenopause" (or "the transition phase") and "menopause" are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference. Menopause is a specific point in time: the day that marks exactly 12 months since a person's last period. Essentially, it is a single moment that can only be determined in retrospect. The transition phase is the broader process – the years before and after menopause – during which the body gradually produces less estrogen. This process lasts for an average of 4 to 10 years. It is during this period that symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep problems, mood swings, and irregular periods occur.

What is menopause?

Menopause marks the natural end of the menstrual cycle. It is defined as the point in time when a person has not had a period for 12 months – typically between the ages of 45 and 55.

At what age does menopause begin?

The average age for menopause is 51, although it can occur earlier or later. Genetics, health, and lifestyle all play a role.

How long does menopause last?

Menopause symptoms can last for several years, but this varies greatly from person to person. Some experience changes for less than two years, while others have symptoms for ten years or longer.

What are the first signs of menopause?

Early signs of menopause, which occur during perimenopause, often include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, and issues with mood or sleep.

What are the most common symptoms of menopause?

Common symptoms include hot flashes, sleep problems, mood swings, vaginal dryness, weight fluctuations, and decreased bone density. However, everyone's experiences and bodies are unique.

Is weight gain a symptom of menopause?

Weight gain is not solely caused by menopause, but hormonal changes can alter how fat is stored – especially around the abdomen. Age, metabolism, and lifestyle also play a role.

Can you get pregnant after menopause?

No. Once menopause has been reached (12 months without a period), natural pregnancy is no longer possible.

Is the treatment safe?

For many people, treatment during perimenopause and menopause is safe, but it depends on age, health status, and family history. A healthcare professional can help assess whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP. When you start treatment, you will receive a letter that you can pass on to your doctor so they are also informed about your treatment. If you wish, we can also share your information with the LSP (the national exchange point) so that other healthcare professionals are kept informed as well.

How much does the medication cost?

In most cases, the medication is covered by your health insurance; however, please be aware of your deductible.

How do I receive the medication?

We ship your medication free of charge in discreet packaging. You can choose to have it delivered to your home address or pick it up yourself at a PostNL collection point.
