About Wegovy
  • Wegovy helps you lose weight and curbs your appetite.
  • It contains semaglutide and is administered as a once-weekly injection.
  • It must only be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise.
  • Not suitable if you are pregnant or have an allergy.
  • Possible side effects: nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness.

Wegovy is a medicine that can help you lose weight and maintain your weight. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which mimics a natural hormone in the body. This hormone plays a role in regulating your appetite and food intake. Wegovy is used in combination with a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults who are obese or overweight and have related health problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Results may vary from person to person.

Each FlexTouch pen contains four doses. The pack for each strength of Wegovy contains 1 pre-filled pen and 4 NovoFine Plus disposable needles (1 pen = 4 doses).

How Wegovy works

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, works by reducing your appetite and making you feel fuller. This can make it easier to eat less and lose weight. The medicine also helps to control blood sugar levels more effectively, which can be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes. Wegovy supports you in adopting a healthier lifestyle, but it cannot replace a healthy diet and regular exercise.

The manufacturers of Wegovy are:

Novo Nordisk A/S

How should you take Wegovy?

Wegovy is administered as an injection under the skin, usually in the stomach, thigh or upper arm. You take it once a week on the same day of the week, regardless of whether you have eaten or not. Start with a low dose and increase it gradually according to the plan your doctor has given you. This reduces the risk of side effects. If you miss a dose, you can take it within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip it and follow your normal schedule.

Too much red tape / missed a dose / stopping the medication

If you accidentally take too much Wegovy, you may experience nausea or vomiting. Contact your doctor if this happens. If you miss a dose, you can take it within 5 days. If you want to stop taking Wegovy, always speak to your doctor first. Stopping suddenly may affect your appetite and weight.

When should you not use it?

Wegovy is not suitable for everyone. Do not use it if you are allergic to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients. It is also not suitable if you have had medullary thyroid cancer or have a rare syndrome called MEN 2.

When should you take extra care when using Wegovy?

Take care when using Wegovy if you have problems with your pancreas, kidneys or liver. If you have had serious stomach or bowel problems, you should also take extra care. Always discuss your medical history with your doctor before starting treatment with Wegovy.

Pregnancy/breastfeeding

Do not use Wegovy if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The medicine may be harmful to your baby. If you become pregnant whilst using Wegovy, stop using it immediately and contact your doctor.

Ability to drive a car and operate machinery

Wegovy does not directly affect your ability to drive or use machinery. However, if you experience side effects such as dizziness, you should take care and avoid driving or using heavy machinery.

Are you taking any other medicines?

Wegovy may affect other medicines, particularly those that affect your blood sugar, such as insulin or other diabetes medicines. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any other medicines to avoid any unwanted reactions.
